Introduction post

Hello! My name is Emily Boyd, and I am currently a senior Health and Exercise Science major (and Spanish minor) at The University of Oklahoma. I am from Tulsa, Oklahoma (as I discussed in my first post) and I would ideally love to move back after graduation. As for what I want to do after graduation, this fall, I will be applying to attend graduate school for Occupational Therapy. Coming in to college, I was definitely one of those people who had no idea what they wanted to major in/do for the rest of their lives. It wasn't until I shadowed a PT, OT, & an ST in the neuro unit of Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston that I discovered my passion for OT. I love the idea of helping people from all walks of life regain or strengthen their ability to perform activities of daily living to further improve their quality of life.
When I am not doing school, I enjoy listening to music, singing, dancing, reading, watching YouTube videos and napping. I don't watch TV often, but when I do, I enjoy watching New Girl re-runs and anything on the Food Network. My favorite Food Network show is probably Chopped, or Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives and I watch them anytime I get the chance. I am the kind of person that picks a couple favorite movies and TV shows and watches them over and over again. Fun fact: I have probably seen both Disney's Hercules and The Notebook about twenty times each (at least).
Like I said before, I am from Tulsa, Oklahoma and love going home any time I get the chance. I have three dogs in Tulsa whom I adore!! I have a poodle named Sam, a poodle mix named Dash and a labradoodle named Huey. Here are some cute pictures of them!!

I hope you have enjoyed learning a little bit about me in my introduction post and I can't wait to learn a little more about all of you!

  1. Hello Emily! First, your dogs are absolutely adorable. I have a toy poodle named Yumi and she makes me so incredibly happy. I hope to some day have as many dogs as you!

I was Health and Exercise Science for a bit but had to change because I was lacking in certain requirements and wanted to graduate on time. I still love that major, though, and I applaud you for getting so far in it! Also, I am also the kind of person who picks a few movies/shows and watches them over and over. It's just so hard to move on when you know what you like! Anyways, I hope you enjoy the course!

  2. Hi Emily! First of all, I LOVE the pictures of your dogs. I have a pet Pomeranian named Maggie, and all the pets in my life have truly felt like family members. I think that it is great that you had the opportunity to shadow different professions to find what you really love. Chopped is also one of my favorite shows. It is so addictive! I hope that you have a great semester.

  3. Hi Emily!
I loved the pictures of your dogs! I never had a pet, so it is always nice to see other people's pets! Like you, I love watching videos and sleeping. Sleeping makes me so happy! I also love watching Food Network shows, especially Guy's Grocery Games. After watching Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives, I get so hungry. I hope I can try at least some of the places that they have shown! Wishing you a good semester!

  4. Hi Emily!

The pictures of your dogs are adorable!! They all look so happy! I think it's cool that you're wanting to pursue a career in occupational therapy and help people regain their strength! I also enjoy singing, dancing, and listening to music in my free time. I think that it's a good way to express your creative side and "de-stress ". Thank you for sharing with us!

  5. Yay for a Spanish minor, Emily! In any kind of work, you never know what doors your language skills will open, and that is especially true in the health care field. And I am the same way about watching movies over and over again, and luckily my husband feels the same way... although with us, it's more like watching the same series. From start to finish. Every single episode. Should we watch The Wire again? No, let's watch Justified. And when we're done with Justified, it's all: Hey, how about we watch Longmire again? And then The Wire again. And Justified. And Longmire. Yeah, we work in some new things... but we're always going back to the old ones. And I never get tired of watching shows where the dialogue is genius, so every moment of every scene is fun to watch and rewatch. And oh my gosh, your dogs are such cuties: so many friendly faces! I know you must be glad to get back to Tulsa wherever you can and enjoy all the adorable dog energy!

  6. Hi Emily! I'm a Spanish minor too, and I totally agree with what Laura said last week: language skills are so important, especially in helping professions! When people get care from people who speak their native language, things can really change for them in the best of ways. Your dogs are so cute, by the way! And it's awesome that you're from Tulsa -- I'm taking a weekend class there this semester, which is the first time I've ever been. It's a lovely town! I'm hoping that when I graduate, I'll find a job either in OKC or Tulsa.

  7. Hey Emily!

I thought about pursuing OT for a while, and I think it is great that you found your passion there! New Girl re-runs are the best, I can really relate to Schmidt. You dogs are incredible! You will have to bring them to OU's campus and take them on a walk so I can meet them. Also - Food Network? YES. This was such a fun post, thanks for sharing!

  8. Hi Emily!

It's great how you discovered you passion for OT in college and how you want to help people regain their strength. I LOVE New Girl! I just finished re-watching it on Netflix for about the third time. I'm also a person who, if I like a movie enough, can re-watch it 20 times (I get it from my mom). And Hercules is definitely one of those movies. Your dogs are absolutely precious by the way and I love their smiles! :)

  9. Hi Emily,

I think it was great that you decided to get into Occupational Therapy because of a shadowing experience. I wish that was a more common and accepted thing to do so that we could all have a better idea of what we want to do. I'm the same way where I don't watch much TV but watch a lot of YouTube videos instead. Have a good semester and good luck with the studies!

  10. Hi Emily, it is nice to meet you!
I think occupation therapy is so cool and it is awesome that you have found a passion for that. I, too, like to rewatch movies and TV shows haha. One Tree Hill is one of my favorite shows and I love the move Burlesque--10/10 recommend. I also love dogs and yours are so so cute!! I have two weiner dogs that are WILD, but super sweet!

  11. Hello, Emily! It’s nice to meet you! I’ve only passed through Tulsa once before, but I’ve heard good things. Maybe you can tell us more about it in the future, especially since you’d like to move back there after graduation. It sounds like we have a lot of similar hobbies! I hope that this class has fulfilled your reading quota thus far. Anyhow, I’m excited to see how mythology and folklore inspires you this semester!

  12. Hello,
I have to say I was not even aware of that occupation when I looked into the medical field. It wasn’t until I met a friend of mine who informed me about it. It opened my eyes to the struggle that people face with just daily tasks. I also like watching food shows. It always gives me the sense of possibility that I could in fact cook the very same meal. I want to say your dogs are adorable! I am more of a cat person but they are so cute!

  13. Hi Emily!

Your dogs are absolutely precious!! I want a labrodoodle so badly and I am so jealous of you! I think that it is amazing that you want to be an occupational therapists. OT has such an important role in the medical field, as they are such an integral part of the recovery process most patients have to experience. I also love New Girl and watch re-runs all the time. Even though I love all the characters, I think my favorite character has to be Schmidt. He is so quirky and funny.

  14. Hi Emily, I really like your picture of your dogs! What kind of dogs are they? Also it's great that you are interested in pursuing OT/PT. We definitely need a lot more of those! Do you plan to work in a dominantly speaking Spanish area with your minor interests? That would be really cool if you were able to combine that aspect of what you learned in with serving people. Anyways, I hope things go well and you get in! Also, have fun in this class!

  15. Hello Emily! Congrats on making it to senior year!! I wish i was lucky enough to be there now but i will eventually. I am glad you found something that you were really into in college and stuck with it. I know a lot of people that would have given up and not tried to find something that worked great for them! Also, your dogs are so cute!! Hope your semester is going well!

  16. Hey Emily!

How wonderful that you have found something you are so passionate about during your time at OU! As someone who has had to have quite a lot of physical therapy (as a ballet dancer it comes with the territory) I have so much respect for anyone who works in this kind of field. I also love cooking/food-related shows, my personal favorite being the Great British Baking Show. Hercules is one of my top two favorite Disney movies, and it is also one I could watch over and over!

  17. Hi Emily!

Your doggos are so cute! I've been wanting to adopt a puppy for ages now, but my apartment only allows small dogs, and my husband and I both want big dogs, so we're waiting a bit (much to my chagrin :( ). Your career path sounds awesome! I'm currently majoring in French (although I'm actually taking a Spanish class right now too!), but I'm planning on going for my RN afterwards. Good luck with the rest of the semester! :)

  18. Hey Emily! Congrats on being a Senior, it is SO excited to know that we are almost done with the first chapter of our lives. That is awesome that you found your passion and exactly what you want to do with your career. It seems like a great fit for you!

I also LOVE New Girl. It has to be one of my top favorite shows to watch and have on in the background. The characters really make the show. I love the pictures you added of your dogs they are adorable!

  19. Hi Emily,

Nice to meet you and thank you for sharing about yourself with the class! I love your dogs, they're all so cute and look so sweet. I like going home as often as I can too because I'm away from my dogs due to being in college at the moment. I hope you have a good time in graduate school and learn lots of new information to help many people! Congratulations on your upcoming graduation, and I hope you have a good rest of your semester!

  20. Hi Emily,
I have a Spanish Minor as well and your name sounds familiar. Did you have Morales for literature last semester? Who has been your favorite professor? I have SeƱora Marchand for medical Spanish at the moment.
    Your dogs are so gorgeous!
Are you applying to the OT program at OUHSC? What programs are you looking at?
